Joe is a freelance theatre designer based in South Wales. Joe’s career has developed throughout an eighteen-year involvement in the arts specialising in lighting, video and scenography for theatre, dance, installation and architecture. He has worked as Technical Director and Resident Designer for Sydney Dance Company and National Dance Company Wales, working with choreographers Christopher Bruce CBE, Ohad Naharin, Angelin Preljocaj, Rafael Bonachela, Stephen Petronio and Nigel Charnock. He has toured extensively, taking work to China, India, Australia, New Zealand and across Europe and the UK.
Joe studied Theatre Design (MA) at the Royal Welsh College Of Music & Drama graduating with distinction, and returns as a guest tutor for the BA & MA stage management and design courses.
Most recent design credits include, Before I Leave, In Water I’m Weightless (National Theatre Wales) Parallel Lines (Dirty Protest) Nansi, Mrs. Reynolds a Cena Bach (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru) Pause And Effect (Maiden Voyage) aM (Kerry Nicholls for NYDW) Whiskers, Furl (Eleesha Drennan) Folk, Quixoteland, Purlieus, They Seek To Find The Happiness They Seem, Virtual Descent (National Dance Company Wales).
In 2013 Joe’s lighting and video design for Purlieus, (National Dance Company Wales), was selected as a finalist at the World Stage Design Exhibition, and was highlighted as one of the Telegraph’s top 15 exhibits. Purlieus was also nominated for design at the Wales Theatre Awards in 2014.
